Cool idea, really cool, but very impractical. Our ancestors were the hallmarks of being practical. Why do you think they built their castles near the source? :P
It's magic! Practical has no place in these concerns.

I like the Escher idea a lot, but I'm starting to think we're not going to get a precise design for the outside of the castle agreed on...

I think the outside should be totally mundane, for ease of drawing/modeling and because people will probably have to do it only once or twice, but the inside is where it could easily get freaky.

Ron, a polygon is what you would call a face in sketchup. When they are reversed they turn an ugly shade of black that you cant do anything with....much like your mustache, what little head hair you have. :P just teasing

It's posible to have a 'mundane' castle? just teasing, I know what you mean

I do think there needs to be something a bit dramatic/weird about the castle's exterior, and bits of it floating/hanging from balloons sounds perfect to me - a bit like Castle in the Sky, maybe?

By the way, as a point of practical consideration that I've realised I'm not going to be able to avoid, where should we say Castle Overlook is? Going by the suggested age, I think it'll have to be in Europe somewhere, which in turn suggests to me (given the 'edge of civilisation' talk) someplace in Eastern Europe, maybe in the Carpathian mountains (Romania?).

I know that pinning down a location for these things often causes the most difficulty, but I need one of my characters to be able to say where it is before they go there...

The castle is everywhere it needs to be kinda like Brigadoon! I only returns to reality once every quadrillion seconds and it occurs everywhere. Scale tried to warn you. But it got lost in the mail. The Castle will become a portal a gate to the neather world. You must all send your toons into the teeth of certain doom to seal the portal for another quadrillion seconds!. Yeah its 2AM and Im not co herent.

I would like for us to know why we are at the Castle. What we are doing there and what we are trying to accomplish and what the end game will be. That way I don't have to pull Lan out of my back pocket again to end the story.

well, Ron, I will be there with Alex and Aden to get a amulet that helps to stabilize his diabetes. Need someone to want it for a minor reason and battle with Alex over it and end up giving to him cause his need is greater, to make it interesting.

Should we put this in a different thread? Just to keep this one for specifically setting queries?

Hehehe... give people a stone and they will build castles in eternity!

All in all I think there are a lot of great descriptions of the castle, as well as explanations for WHY everything is it looks like it does... and things works the way they do.
Let's hear all of them! Let all the characters present their theories giving a total chaotic image of the place, heightening the atmosphere :D
... and not one of them will probably be right :P

To make it easiest for everyone, you could say that the castle and valley exists on the brink of civilization in every world ! (with the area having a general Transylvanien outlook in all of them).
Somehow, something in the castle, its history, or perhaps the site itself causes it to exists in a multitude of places at the same time, perhaps adding to an explanation on why the castle is a hoxpox of building styles, not only through time, but through different worlds!
The castle may on the outside look like a huge complex, but the inside may be even larger, with even more strange buildings and rooms, not all of them of what we would call standard "castle-stock", and still the castle exists several places at the same time.

.... which may be why different characters can be in the same general area, but the surroundings may look a tad bit different ;)

Why are people drawn to this place? The return of the castles original family owners has caused it to appear more solid in the different worlds, and perhaps somebody comes to investigate or has gotten news of the invitation? :)

To give Ron (he should make the initial 2D model, right?) something to work with, what about saying that the castle lies along and on a minor low ridge, stretching for mayeb two hundreds of yards, an outer wall preventing sheer drop to the valleyfloor and shielding building after building behind in layers up to those at the top, a kind of Minas Tirith effect?

My 15 cents 8)

I'm still working on my second, much higher quality (really!) draft of the castle.

Well, I'm not at the moment, as I'm at a house where I have neither it nor a scanner, BUT I will be soon.

Anyway, my thought that it would be a classic floating castle-on-a-rock, e.g. this, only with more different architecture styles and stuff.

Other than that I was going to have it mostly obey the laws of physics on the outside.

So uh, just give me a bit, aright?

I don't know about having the whole thing on a floating rock... I don't think you could get the sprawling effect of a really big castle like that; I'd prefer to see most of it on solid ground, with maybe just a few towers here and there floating.

Well, it just has to be a really BIG floating rock ;)

Just let me know what you think of it once it's finished and posted, a'ight?

So far the castle is looking really stupid and badly planned with little ryme or reason... That is what we were going for right?

Okay, it's not really done yet but I figured I'd share what I had.

Please try to focus more on the castle and less on the scan quality.

Anyway, the reason I'm showing this now is in no small part because I kind of ran out of castle styles to use (well, that I like). Any suggestions? Comments? Concerns? Questions? Question marks?

That's pretty cool. I like the lighthouse. I'm still against having the entire castle on a floating rock (I just see it naturally at the mouth of some high mountain valley), but other than that cool.

Sticking it in a pass would be nice too, yeah, but floating rocks are just inherently awesome.
Especially with inexplicable waterfalls coming from them.

Besides, if it was in a pass the lighthouse wouldn't make any sense. This way it actually has a purpose (namely, to keep airships from crashing into the castle).

And of course, it is a floating rock in a freaking huge mountain range.

Also, another idea I liked was having the graveyard directly below the castle. ;)
