The Cameo City

Postby Hogan » Fri Jan 13, 2012 11:32 pm

This is a fun little project that, so far, has no strings attached.

It's about putting together a city, adding all the various shops and important buildings such a city would have, but instead of being creative ourself, we'll borrow the buildings from established webcomics and erect them in our city... the Cameo City.

In order for a building to be added it must have some degree of notority, it must be an integrated element of its parent comic and not just a place the characters visit once in a while. The building or shop having a name doesn't heard either.

No characters to go with the buildings so far, just the buildings themselves.

Cameo City so far consists of the following buildings:

Atomic Laundromat - Laundry
Castle Heterodyne - Castle
Club 501 - Gay Bar
Coffee of Doom - Coffee Shop
The Cross Time Cafe - Cafe
Doc's Machine - Paint Ball Shop
Dr. McNinja - Doctor
Food Baron - Food Store Market
Ginger's Bread - Bakery
House of LSD - Adult Movie Studio
Moperville High - High School
Multiplex - Cinema
Nerderotica - Erotic Call Center
Pixie Trix Comix - Comic shop (link NSFW)
Pr0nCrest - Adult Movie Studio (Link NSFW)
Salty Crackers Comics - Comic Shop
Shortpacked! - Toy Store
Tandy Gardens - High School
Tempest High - High School
Terminal - Train Station

And the following streets:

Bishop Street
44 Union Avenue

Off course, a city, especially a large city, can hold several different shops of the same kind, so don't let that keeping us back from adding!

So... let's build this city!

I was surprised at how few of the comics I read have places that met your qualifications.

There is the Institute at Magical Misfits, but that's on an island & wouldn't work in your city setting. There is the apartment building the Roomies stay at In CRFH!!!, but I don't think it has a name. There is Jerry & Joe's Diner in The KAMics, but it's only appeared in three comics so doesn't really count.

I know, its a tough one building this city, and therein lies the challenge!
... and then again, Rome wasn't build in a day either ;)

How could we forget Nerderotica?

http://aetheria-epics.schala.net/index.html A train station

http://mokepon.smackjeeves.com/comics/1433242/chapter-5-page-13/ Gym

I think these might qualify. If not I think I know what to look for.

As is the setting for the current issue of my comic, we can have Club 501: Cameo City's own gay bar. And it's pan-dimensional, so it can easily be in many places.
All the bad things in life only help you appreciate the good even more.

Basically we are looking for places and/or buildings that are considered a permanent part of their comic of origin, e.g. a place the characters keep coming back to and which are referred to even while they are not there... like a place the character works etc.
It's a tricky and difficult quest, but I think we got a good batch of buildings down on the list alreayd :-)

As far as I could gleam from both comics (I GOT to mark them down for a full read-through at one point!), the train-station of Terminal would qualify, though I think the "Gym" might not be considered a permanent landmark... yet!

Anyone feel free to correct me... :-)

A gaybar you don't find anywhere, and I think this'll qualify for addition to Cameo City!

I was reading Girl Genius. I haven't read enough yet, but would Heterodyne Castle count?

Hmm... a huge medieval castle in the outskirts of the city... could fit in.

Okay, lets try to expand this city a bit... while stille keeping an eye out for shops and buildings to add, lets get some names added to the streets!

As with the shops & buildings, the streetnames must come from webcomics and must be used often enough as to be considered a permanent part of the comic's cityscape.

One the fly I can think of:

Bishop Street
44 Union Avenue
