Halloween Cameo Caper 2012... where shall we go?
It's time again...
We may still have a few stragglers from last year's Caper, but considering the great work that was produced and the general interest in the project, I think its safe to say that we can go on and think about the setting of a new Halloween Cameo Caper in for 2012!
What's a Halloween Cameo Caper you say?
Well, the Cameo Caper in continuing an old annuarly tradition (5 years+) about trying to get a multi-webcomic (no kind, style or hosts bared) cameo caper running through the month of October (though starting before and taking it beyond by some people usually happens), culminating on Halloween Eve, October the 31st) where, hopefully, everyone will have one major hell of a Halloween Webcomic Party for everybody participating!
The original and basic concept is that, at the date of Halloween (or the day closest to, taking updates schedules into accounting), the particpating artists post a strip (canon, none-canon, filler etc.) on their site or here in the forum, showing their characters and as many characters from other comics as possible, having fun and celebrating the Halloween in the chosen setting. Thats the concept you sign up for! One strip at the day of Halloween! No more, no less...
BUT... nothing prevents, and nothing HAS so far prevented, any and all participant from creating whole storylines centered around the event, storylines the go way before and beyond the month of October and Halloween Eve. Furthermore there's nothing to prevent the participating webcomics from joining up and forming crossovers with each other for the sake of the event, exactly like it has been done before! Actually... its only recommended, but not a demand
The previous years have been great experiences, and we hope to see many new and old faces in the Cameo Caper for 2012, congreting to make yet another memorable event!
But first, before anyone signs up for anything... first we have to decide where to host the Caper of 2012!
In 2006 the first year the Caper went to the town of Shelterville in the old Wild West, 2007 went to Disneyland orbiting a faraway planet in the near future, in 2008 a a zombie-filled mall was throughoutly thrashed, 2009 gave hauntings of castle of Overlook a bad reputation and 2010 gave the crew and passengers of the spaceship NCS Nostromummy a few last days of their life to remember and in 2011 Time finally caught up with the secluded and Dinosaur filled Valley in the Hillsfar Mountains...
Which place better start barricading this year before the Caper arrives?
The following is a list of hithero suggested places to hold the Caper, compiled from over the years...
20's Chicago
Ancient China
Austrian Alps/Wooden remote cabin - Snowstorm optionable
CameoComic
Earth's Core
The Middle Ages
Battle of the Bands Setting
In a Pyramid
Salvador Daelisk's World
Under the Sea
Feel free to come up with any imaginable idea that can suggest a fantastic and interesting idea setting where to host the Cameo Caper of 2012! This thread is for collecting those suggestions as well as any discussions, and you don't have to even think about signing up for the Cameo Caper just yet, just feel free to take part in choosing the place!
The discussion will come to an end at the 30th of April, after which point a poll will be set up, a poll featuring the 10 hottest topics of the thread for everyone to vote on to get the final result...
When the setting has been chosen, a more detailed campaign for the exact location will be provided... so therefore DO come up with various ideas while suggesting and voting... everything helps to make the setting as memorable as the previous ones!
Also, no matter if you plan on participating or not, you are welcome to give your 5 cents with regards to ideas for the place, setting and everything else... its appreciated!
------------------------------------------------
Edit:
A few days short, the deadline for giving suggestion have been reached!
I've gathered all the new suggestions (lots of interesting ones this year) as well as those of the previous years which actually had some merit and put them all up in the above poll for voting!
As usual, anyone on this forum can cast their vote, no matter if they plan on participating in the event or not, and the more who give their votes, the better!
Sign-up's for the Caper CAN be done at this point, but please don't do so unless you are 100% sure you can participate no matter the setting chosen
Poll will close at the end of May, giving people enough time to sign up and start planning before the event starts in earnest.
Happy voting!

Here are some ideas. A mad scientist's base centered in the eye of a giant whirlpool on the ocean's floor with flaming axes of all sorts falling from the sky, an ancient Incan/Aztec temple, or in the fourth wall.
I think therefor I am.

A few ideas from the House of Hogan (though not from Hogan himself):
The Antarctic
The Northpole

You forgot to put "- Snowstorm optionable" after those.Hogan wrote:The Antarctic

Although the Antarctic would mean my penguins could be there... not to mention those hungry, hungry killer whales & sharks.
Of course the North Pole brings to mind Santa's workshop. Uh oh... "How The Webcomics Wrecked Christmas!".

WHAT!?! I'm not even done with the last one yet! :: cry ::
But as such, I like the snow Idea... Lots of, you know, nothing to draw... >.>
Seriously though, I think the settings work best when they're both iconic, and somewhat plot agnostic or general. The Western town and Space station are particularly good examples of this.
20's Chicago would be a lot of fun from the writing side, but I don't know if there is really much in the way of easy iconography that goes along with the backgrounds to make the setting. Now a pirate setting, Tortuga style pirate bay kind of thing might be a lot of fun for the purposes of both paraphernalia and immediately recognizable imagery.
Particularly I think, (and this is speaking to my own preferences both for creating and enjoying others comics) I think the "restaurant at the end of the universe" sort of effect of having an already out-of-time or out-of-world space where everybody is showing up is one of the most fun parts.
I guess the short version is, I'd add to the list a pirate bay sort of thing, and I like a few that are already on there. Looking forward to the discussion!

If this is done in a snowy environment then we need polar bears!

As the local spambot-wrangler... I support this suggestion!
Personally I could see this heading over to the snowy side... would give the B&W-comics a nice angle

How about a comic con? I think it would be interesting.

Or, another one, to be more fantastical: a land made of candy. It fits with Halloween, too, due to candy being so ingrained into the holiday.

Oh! I say thats quite an interesting suggestion! Never mind me not having been to ComicCon, this opens op for a lot of oppurtunities for random shenanigans not to mention loads of cosplay cameos, webcomic artist appearenaces and... varios... other... references...KarabearComics wrote:How about a comic con? ... what was I saying? There's nothing to see here! Move along please! This is not the setting you are looking for!

You know... I realize this was in jest, but that might be kind of awesome. Not necessarily that specific, but "in the net." Imagine the cameo crossover in a TRON like net-space where anything and everything on the internet might be found!

I was going to suggest an interdimensional coffee shop, but now that I see the CameoSpace idea, I say we have an internet coffee shop that physically exists on the internet, Tron style.
The difference between good and evil is only perception. That's why I choose an alignment of chaotic neutral, so I don't have to worry over such stupid things as morals.

Re: Halloween Cameo Caper 2012... where shall we go?
I can just imagine the waitresses: "Welcome to Hogan's Diner. Axe us about our specials." And they'd be obligated to say that.
And there would be the menu: the apple crossover (suspiciously similar to an apple turnover) and cameomille tea.
Gosh darn it, though I still prefer my suggestion of a comic con, I would think this one would be great, just to see what fun Hogan-related puns we can come up with.
Of course, I'm treating it like a real diner and not a cyber one. But if it were real, one could assume it could be at the con. Are there food establishments at comic conventions? I've never been to one (Redding, where I live, is halfway between Sacramento and the Oregon border--and I don't have the ability to drive; 17 and still no license--it's sad).

Fun as some of the potential is of setting it in a comic con, I have to admit some reticence to set it anywhere that is going to mandate 90% crowd scenes. >.>KarabearComics wrote: Gosh darn it, though I still prefer my suggestion of a comic con...
