I like the style of Wheels' castle, but it needs to be much bigger (or at least involve a lot more structures).

thats a nice castle, but sketchup (pro, which I have) does not export models well, you have to make sure each and every line is connected somewhere, Like I am doing with your cockpit. I hat 36 thirty-six reversed polys on it straight from you, Ron, I'll be sending it back to show you an example of good geometry. Sketchup is nice but you do have to fight with it to export well. If no one objects, and for those who uses 3d models I could download the castle, give it a once over and upload it as an obj with textures.

Of course curves are always tricky and the cockpit has lots :P but dont feel bad about it, i had to learn how to make good geomtry too :)

I under stand what xade is saying, my use of 3d models consists of it looks good, put in the angle I need, make a 2d export out. Paste it in photoshop as part of my story. I'm surpised Xade didn't faint when she got the Starworth and Terran Scout Models. Since I really have no idea what I'm doing. But I just need 2D. The 3D models just allow me to pose my object. That's why I don't need pro since unless I start to do a 3d modeling version of MM it's more than I need as the free download. I forgot to consider 3D modelers when I made this post. And yes I agree with Tink we need a much more complex enormous castle than this one. (Unless you make me draw it then I'm back to the phone booth suggestion) I only presented this one as a Google Sketchup demo :D

well, the TS I can work with, and truthfully, I never opened the starsworth model; I never needed it nor had time for it. However, since I am working with you on...something I needed the TS models and already converted the TS model, however the cockpit ill need a lot of work for me to use it, probably requiring a full UVing for the display screens. As such im saving that for last and working on the youngest again to finish him off, soon as I can figure out how to move the morphs over to the new model

I figure most everyone'll have to redraw it anyway, and drawing is easier than 3d modeling for me ;)

However, if someone makes a good model, I won't complain.

Anyway, still working on draft 2. Putting more effort in this time.
Also, that castle wasn't nearly sprawling enough. I know you weren't suggesting that particular one, Ron, but enough people seemed to think so...

I asked my sister for help with the castle, since she knows stuff about different types of architecture and stuff, and among other things, she told me that medieval castles generally didn't have hallways - the rooms were connected directly into each other.
I thought I should mention that as it sounds like excellent maze-fodder. :D

yep, hallways were useless because your principle method of heating was a fireplace. the castle i'd be using would probably be wheel's stripped down version, since i'll be aproaching from 1000 years or so back.

I'm just going to have my characters stand next to a sign that says "Overlook Castle ->" and maybe comment that it looks like an architect went off the edge of yon overlook and didn't come back.

Then again, I'm lazy.

The imagination of readers based on such a comment can sometimes create much more vivid and extraordinaire images than even the best artist can render :P

OK since my Sketchup suggestion has been greeted with such a resounding snore. How about we make the Castle outside constantly changing as does it's inside. Only thing is it does not change while your looking at it. Only when you look away. If four walk through a door single file they will arrive in four different rooms. Only walking through a door shoulder to shoulder will guarantee arriving in the same room.
This will allow us to all draw the castle any way we damn well please. I am really interested in how Little Beast is going to render that complicated (and awesome) castle as a sprite!
I am thinking about having my art style change every time the toons change rooms. Kamics, order of the stick, Yafgc, maybe I'll learn how to make sprites! Anyway I respectfully back off from my 3D castle idea since you are all freakin scardy cats! But we still have time to get really nasty before we have to fly this bird.

oh poo, dont be such a wet blanket Ron, it is a nice castle, a very nice castle, just not expansive enough, Think bigger this time, this thing lives on a nexus of magic energy, with each generation adding their own special touch, so of course its going to be sprawling! I kinda like the different rooms idea but make it where its line of sight or like a 5 foot radius at least. say someone stops to tie their shoe, allowing his/her friends to draw ahead then ruins to catch up only to find him/herself in a totally different area than the one that he/she saw their friends enter.

O_O dibs on the shoe tying!

Edit: and Ron, I know you only export 2d pics, and sketchup is awesome for that.

You realize that if you challenge me Miss Xade I am going to make you all very very sorry. For I have great power and I am liable to design something impossible to draw! Bwahahahahahahahhah ooh I scared myself.

I dont draw, I use 3d, once we agree upon something, even if it's not of your design, I would have top ask that someone upload the skip file somewhere, if we decide on a sketchup file.

How do you all feel about a comletely impossible design say a castlebuilt in clumps with no paticular up or down anchored to the ground by a single set of stairs and nothing else with shutes and ramps leading to clusters of buildings and leading in and out of clouds with prehaps some parts being held in place by a balloon. Miss matched architecture with bridges to nowhere. Walkways uoside down. Once again this could be done in Sketch up and rendered in 2d. You would be able to have indoor and outdoor events. walking on the ceiling and such stuff. the whole structure climbing syward into the statosphere.

well, if you design something of that sort in sketchup I would have to insist that you think about the 3d comics as well and for each angle trace the line that makes the angle with the line tool as you go along, it would be much easier to prevent reversed polygons if you do it that way. the wonderful stairwell in chapter 2 was done in sketchup, and I had to learn the hard way to trace each angle and bend. heres an example of what I mean from a closeup view of your own TS cockpit.

I know it looks tacky when you're just exporting it to use in a hand drawn comic, however, you must also think of how a real spaceship would look. Would a real ship be bent around those lines or would they have seams?

Castles have seams, they have bricks, boards and everything else. In fact, they are made from huge blocks of stone, cut by hand and carried by mules to the location. Normally it was within easy range of the source of stone to save on time and money, which is why they often sat on or around a mountain. Castles were also riddled with secret corridors between the rooms so the royal family, or other occupants, could escape from enemies, or even spy on thyem. Quite often visitors never stumbled upon the secrets unless they were actually looking for them and knew that a certain stone moved this way to allow a hidden door on rusty hinges to move. They rarely greased the hinges because the smell of grease would give the door away. Of course sometimes they rusted shut but...

The balloon idea would not be practical, Ron, this is a castle that has been sitting here for thousands of years. the air would have leaked out and the structure would have collapsed in on itself. Cool idea, really cool, but very impractical. Our ancestors were the hallmarks of being practical. Why do you think they built their castles near the source? :P

I am sorry that I reverse my polygons. It's been a problem since I was a very small child. Reversed polygons everywhere! Other kids wouldn't play with me my teachers at school tried but still my polygons were reversed.
My mother enrolled me in a special school and drained the family fortune. It has been my shame for years but I have been unable to kick the reverse polygon habit. And in spit of all this I have no idea what a polygon is or how you reverse it!

And who the hell let practical in here! Next thing you know you'll be letting logic in the room.
